Ryan Palmer fell short in a marathon playoff at the U.S. Open sectional qualifier in Dallas.
No matter – he’s headed to Merion, anyway.
Palmer was one of six players who were added to the 156-player U.S. Open field on Monday.
The USGA held six spots in the field for players who could potentially qualify by being in the top 60 in the world ranking as of Sunday night. Only Kyle Stanley, who played the 2005 U.S. Amateur at Merion, earned one of those available berths, after sliding from No. 59 to No. 60 in the world.
As a result, five alternates from sectional qualifying now have a tee time at Merion: Palmer, Mike Weir (Columbus sectional), Harold Varner III (Rockville), Ryan Yip (Springfield) and Rikard Karlberg (England).
